Doubleaux

(Published on 26. July 2021, 19:25 by doctordevice)

A variation on tharn11's beautiful Standard Young Tableaux puzzle.

Puzzle Type: Double-Digit Tableaux + Arrow
Puzzle Links: f-puzzles, CTC App (mobile friendly)
Rules:

  1. Classic: Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  2. Arrow: Digits along arrows sum to the number in the circle.
  3. Double-Digit Tableaux: Within cages, double-digit numbers (read horizontally left-to-right without overlap*) must increase from top to bottom along columns and increase along rows from left to right. Digits and double-digit numbers may repeat within cages if allowed by other rules.
*for example, r1c1 and r1c2 form a two-digit number, the number to its right is r1c3 and r1c4, the number below it is r2c1 and r2c2.

Note: If the placement of two-digits numbers within cages is unclear, here is an image with coloring to indicate the positions of two-digit numbers within the cages. Each horizontal pair of yellow/blue cells forms a two-digit number. To play this version use the links below.

Puzzle Links (color-shaded version): f-puzzles, CTC App

Solution code: Enter Row 1 then Row 2. 18 digits, no punctuation (e.g., 123456789123456789).

Lovely variation of the initial tableaux thermo idea. Familiarity with the logic in a double-digit thermo helped, so it went fairly smoothly. Thanks :-)

Glad you enjoyed it! It does take a little bit to get a feel for the rules, but I'm pleased with the way the cages ended up interacting. The intention was for it to be a roughly 2/5 difficulty puzzle with room for an extra 1/5 difficulty for getting the hang of unfamiliar rules.

Got my head around the rules then had fun with it. Thanks! I enjoyed the solve path, and the colored version helped.

Swapped the color-shaded version to one that is hopefully clearer

Is something like this clearer? https://f-puzzles.com/?id=yj2rwjbk I was worried the tableau in the middle would make it confusing if I used the same color scheme everywhere.

Each number within a cage must be larger than the number immediately left of it and the number immediately above it. So yes, R2C1/R2C2 can be smaller than R1C7/R1C8.
