Picnic Sudoku - Irregular Blankets

(Published on 23. July 2021, 20:09 by hamslice)

Standard Sudoku rules apply except the regions are irregular in shape and are to be deduced.

Digits on thermometers must increase from the bulb end to the tip. If a thermometer leaves a region, it may not re-enter that same region further along the thermometer.

Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of the digits between the 1 and 9 in the respective row or column. Digits between the 1 and 9 in any row or column (never including the 1 or 9 themselves) is classed as a sandwiched cell.

For each thermometer, every cell on the thermometer must be a sandwiched cell OR every cell on the thermometer must belong to the same region. Conversely, if a thermometer is entirely enclosed by a single region, then no cell on that thermometer may be a sandwiched cell.

Penpa+ Link I had fun making this picnic, and you know what they say about picnics: don’t forget your leftovers, it’s a law!

Solution code: Row 1, then Column 9, then the number of regions touching the edge of the grid, in a 19-digit string.

I can't check the link, but I think you got the sandwich right. I've been through the same scenario. The 19 on the top right can branch or go down.

After 5+ hours I thought I got it, but the last regions don't fit. Can anyone please tell me if I at least got the sandwiches correct?

A whole morning gone. I was like, wake up puzzle. I'm going to find a sandwich.
Hints for future solver, 19 can be on the thermo and not sandwich, a row sandwich can also be at a non column sandwich part. Or you'll break it.

Ooo, I get it, that's hard.

Just to be clear, thermo can only be all sandwich or one region? No partial sandwich allowed?

Yep, no thermometer can be partially sandwiched. :)
