Non-Consecutive Renban Sudoku

(Published on 14. July 2021, 17:21 by ekeilty)

I think this rule-set has a lot of potential. I hope this puzzle showcases the beautiful logic that it allows

Rules:

  • Normal Sudoku Rules apply
  • Digits separated by a white dot must be consecutive (no negative constraint)
  • Grey lines are “non-consecutive renbans”
    • Renban constraint: each grey line contains a set of consecutive, non-repeating digits, in any order
    • non-consecutive constraint: digits on the grey line may not be consecutive with their "adjacent" digits on the line.
    • Example: if r1c3 was a 1, then r2c2 could not be a 2 since that cell is adjacent to the 1 from the perspective of the renban line. However, r1c2 could be a 2 since it is not on the 1's renban line.

Solution code: Column 3 and the 9-cell renban line, both from top to bottom (18 digit number).

Yes it is true that a 1 cannot go in r1c3. The example was just meant to illustrate what was meant by a "non-consecutive renban line".

It is possible the wording of the example was unclear when translating to German. For that I apologize.

das Beispiel ist doch unsinnig, R1C3 kann keine 1 sein, denn dann müsste der Rest 2-3-4 lauten und das geht unmöglich bei dieser Regel. Außerdem kann dann R1C2 auch keine 2 sein.

So good to see the order of a renban line matter for once! Usually they have different ways to twist and turn among the same set of cells, and it doesn't matter for the puzzle, which has always felt unsatisfying to me.

The term "non-consecutive renban" is also funny because renban literally means "consecutive" in Japanese. Incomprehensible understanding, anybody?
