Japanese Medians Sudoku

(Published on 9. July 2021, 15:00 by RockyRoer)

So I've been playing around the logic that comes from using Medians instead of sums or averages -- so this puzzle springs from that. Here are some other puzzles using Medians:

The Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply, so fill every row, column, and 3x3 box with the digits from 1-9.
  • Shade some cells so that the numbers on the outside of each row and column are the medians of the unshaded cells in that row/column in order. Recall a median is the middle number of the numbers when they are sorted if there is an odd number of cells, and it's the average of the two middle numbers if there is an even number of cells. Some examples:
    • The median of the single digit 4 is 4.
    • The median of the two digits 3 and 5 is 4.
    • The median of the three digits 1 4 8 is 4.
    • The median of the four digits 2 3 5 9 is 4.
  • A question mark means there is a median with an unknown INTEGER value to be determined.
    • The median of the eight digits 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9 is 4.5 which is not an integer.
    • The median of the six digits 1,2,3,5,8,9 is 4. which IS an integer.
  • All groups of unshaded cells are represented by a clue - either a number or a question mark.

@marcmees: Yes, every strings of unshaded cells is represented in the clues, by either a number or a question mark - i. e. has an integer median. The rules do need to be more explicit on that.

Medians instead of sums? May I be so bold to assume x-sum, Sandwich, parity party and position sum will have a new variant. Excited.

Reply: as a matter of fact, I have messed around a bit with x-medians. Also had a working, but boring, kakuro. I think little killer medians with the potential for repeated digits may be the next median adventure I take. Although I’d love to see others try it.
