Parity Party XX, "Crescendo"

(Published on 19. June 2021, 01:06 by glum_hippo)

Normal Sudoku rules apply. No digit may repeat in a row, column, or 3x3 box.

Special rules of Parity Party: A number at the edge of the grid indicates the sum of cells encountered when moving through the grid from that vantage point, UP TO AND INCLUDING the first odd or first even digit. For example, a 15 at the bottom of a column could indicate something like 7-8, 8-7, 1-3-5-6 or 2-6-4-3 (among others) when reading up that column... but not 1-2-3-4-5 or 2-6-3-4 etc. That is, the parity of the farthest digit must deviate from that of the others.

Note: If the clue is less than 10, it might simply indicate the value of the first cell. That is to say, you could be adding up zero odd and one even number, or vice versa.

Rossini Sudoku: Arrow symbols along the edge mean a strictly increasing or decreasing sequence in the first 3 digits. Think of it like a 3-cell thermo in the direction of the arrow. The negative constrain applies as well, i.e., if no symbol is shown then the middle digit must be the highest or lowest.

Note that Rossini and Parity Party clues could co-exist at one and the same location on the edge! But it just so happens that they do not: All of the sequences marked with a Parity Party clue are also anti-Rossini.

Jumping across boxes across each other was never this fun ;)

~oOo~

I'm glad you found it that way, Niverio. The interactions are very tight between the boxes.

Very nice and original! The beginning was the definitely the hardest part (after 40 min I still had only two digits in the grid), then it eased up and flowed beautifully. A very satisfying puzzle in the end.

I'm glad to hear it, Magnus! Thanks for solving

Thank you to Jesper, PixelPlucker and marcmees for your kind words! I really enjoyed working with this constraint. It won't be my last attempt to make something from it.

Beautiful...worth the time looking for the logical way in. thanks

Whew! Maybe it's me being unfamiliar with Rossini, but I can safely count this among the hardest PP puzzles I've attempted. But I really enjoyed the process, and was fascinated with the logic that ultimately got me there - even if I made it much more circuitous than necessary! Thanks!

Very nice! It took me a while to find the logic to start this one, but I am happy that I persevered.
