Chinese coin (double digit thermometer sudoku)

(Published on 18. June 2021, 14:59 by Aspartagcus)

I set this puzzle as a challenge for myself to see if it was at all possible. I was wondering if one could use a single clue to create a 9x9 sudoku with a unique solution, and decided to try it out with a double digit thermometer. It turned out to be a nice puzzle with interesting logic, so I decided to put it up here.

Edit: This puzzle was featured on Cracking the Cryptic :)

If you like this, check out Garford's double digit thermo puzzles here, here, here and here.

RULES:
- Standard sudoku rules apply.
- The thermometer is a double digit thermometer, that has to be populated by double digit numbers. Each number starts with the tens-digit followed by the units digit seen from the bulb (tens and units digits alternate along the line). The numbers have to strictly increase moving away from the bulb.

Here is a 4x4 example, which can be solved here: Penpa+ link

Enjoy!

one of the most elegant and beautiful puzzles I've seen,
all the information you'll ever need packed in a simple line. very glad I stopped the ctc video after reading the rules.

Thanks! :) That means a lot to me.

I really like this one. No givens, one clue and an unique solution. Wow. The solution was also quite nice.

This is my favorite type of sudoku puzzle: You take one additional rule and then ask if that rule can give a puzzle with a unique solution, without adding any extra information like given digits or killer cages, etc. Finding a puzzle like that can be hard, and finding one that can be solved smoothly is even harder. Well done!

Thank you! :)

Very tricky and smooth puzzle. One devil was blinking, but I like devils.

Not sure what that means, but thanks! :)

Thank you Aspartagus for the help!

No worries, your mistake was an easy one to make. Glad you enjoyed it, still. :)
