Distance Sudoku

(Published on 10. April 2021, 14:51 by RockyRoer)

I came across a couple of "Distance Sudoku" puzzles by Richard and cdwg and thought I'd try to create one of my own with my own twist on the ruleset. If you enjoy this, here's the puzzles that inspired it:

My twist on the rules is that the row and column number determine the distances between numbers.

The Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply - fill every row, column, and box with the numbers 1 to 9.
  • Clues around the outside give the numbers that are N steps away from the N, where N is the row or column number. When two digits are given, the order of the digits must be determined by the solver.
    • For example, a 3 5 in the 2nd row means there must be a 3 and a 5 exactly 2 steps away from the 2 in that row. This could be ##3#2#5## or #5#2#3###
    • For example, a 8 ? outside the 3rd row means there must be an 8 3 steps away from a 3, as well as another number 3 steps away from the 3. This could be #8##3##?#, but couldn't be #3##8####.

A rare occasion where the puzzle is easier for me than suggested.

Reply: I did waffle between 2 and 3 stars for difficulty. It's not too hard once you get your mind wrapped around the novel rules. Not like cdwg2000's 2nd Distance Sudoku which i have yet to solve!

Smooth solve. I was constantly worried that my counting was wrong, which I suppose is a consequence of the constraint. Very fun.

Reply: I know the feeling. This is v 1.2 of the puzzle. v1.1 had multiple solutions because i miscounted once :-)
