007 - Licence to Kill

(Published on 25. March 2021, 19:45 by Kafkapharnaum)

Probably the most obvious theme for a sudoku variant using the digit 0 ("doppelganger" - see a 4x4 example here), so I just had to go and do it!

DOPPELGANGER RULES

– Every row, column, and box contains the digit 0 always, as well as eight out of the nine digits from 1 to 9 (ie, it's missing one digit that is not 0)
– No two row, no two column, and no two box may be missing the same digit
– For each 0 in the grid, the digits missing in its row, its column, and its box must be three different digits
*** Also, note that a zero always acts as itself (ie, the lowest possible value), regardless of what digits it's replacing in its box, row and column

Thermo clues – Numbers must strictly increase from the bulb to the tip
Killer clues – The clues in cages refer to the sum of the digits contained in said cages, and digits cannot repeat within a cage
The clues outside the grid refer to the sum of the digits in their respective row or column

Great puzzle, very interesting. Quite tricky despite the large number of clues. Took me a while to figure out how to get started are the initial deductions, but once I did it flowed very nicely.
...............
What a nice surprise today, thank you so much for the solve and comment on this one! It's a little chaotic, isn't it XD But in replaying it around the time of chrisj50's solve, I was still pleasantly surprised with many of the interactions, all over the place though they are -- glad you thought so too!

Stunning. Thematic layout is very very nice & belies what was a very tough solve, well over 2hrs for me. Box 4 was my favourite bit :) Glad I persisted as it was well worth the effort! Congrats on another beautiful puzzle
....................
Oh, congrats! You beat the upload to the Discord Archive haha. I plan on archiving the very first one and this one in order as they'll hit their 3 years anniversary. Super happy to see this one finally rated, so thanks a ton for your solve and comment, glad you enjoyed it! :D

This one looked easier (with all the given clues) than it actually was. Sticking to the zero- logic helped a lot. So it was funny and relaxing- I really liked it as all your other puzzles!
............
Thank you so much, I'm happy to hear that! -- This one also *looks* like it was easier to set but I actually had a really hard time, it's crazy how often these minithermos broke haha (which ultimetaly is what probably makes it slightly easier than the others)
So I think that completes your 9x9 journey, congrats and thanks a million! If you still want more, I think there's still the 'tough buggers' that you could like, as they're spicy little ones (still not the 9x9's though of course): 'Parcae', and the multigrid 'Nanodoppelgangers'
.....
02-25: Hello, I hope you're well! Not sure if you get notifications for each additional reply, but seeing how you solved all of Bodemeister's Doppelgangers, I just wanted to attract your attention on yet another Doppelganger puzzle that appears to have slipped by you, from KenGlue. It's very nice and the 4/5 difficulty rating is about right:

haha, this really felt like absolute walk in a park after your Solaris. yet another wonderful puzzle with my favourite ruleset!
...........
Haha, well, my own understanding of this ruleset has come a long way since this one -- man I remember having sweat so much to set it XD
I'm really happy you liked it, but not as happy as the rest of your comment made me, I'm very touched that you like this ruleset so much --- a great many thanks filuta! :D

Very intricate and fascinating! I’ve got no idea how you would go about setting this monster of a puzzle! It was very easy to go wrong — I definitely did more than once. Very enjoyable nonetheless!
..........
Oh wow, we're on at exactly the same time haha -- yes, this one I had an incredibly hard time to set, though I didn't have the experience I had back then
There's an interesting piece of logic that goes into setting puzzles with that exact ruleset, which again, I can share with you if you're interested in setting some
Otherwise I'll let you discover it, since it obviously makes solving these a lot easier haha

Alright, I guess I’ll have to finish your other puzzles first, then! I’ve got at least one really evil idea for a puzzle with this constraint — if I even can manage setting it.
.............
Oh I'd be thrilled to help, that's for sure! (I guess I should really join the discord at this point XD)

You definitely should! :D

I’ve set a *monstrous* 4x4 now that I’ll send you if you join discord. :P
...........
Hahaha, alright, you got me! I was gonna join anyway, but I'm really behind on work and so that'll need to wait till this evening. I'm really looking forward to seeing it tough! :D
**EDIT: Done! I'm finally on Discord XD

oh man, that's a puzzle I really would like to solve... but I think it is too hard for me... is there any technique I should have acquire from the past ones?
--------------
Yeah, I think the straddling + repeated cage totals + symmetry of the thermos might be a bit much for a new variant and I can't help but see that the people who solved it so far are pretty much all master solvers...
The main technique for this variant is to keep track of which digits COULD be missing from a row, column, but especially a box, and if you use my 'extended version' link, you can actually use the candidates function in the cells outside the grid!
And with this, to wait until you are absolutely sure a digit has been eliminated elsewhere before entering it by sudoku only (ie, when there is no killer clue available). Hope this help, and thanks again for the continued attention toward my puzzles! :D
