Phantom Killer Cages/Käfige

(Published on 17. March 2021, 08:23 by Ryx)

Normal Sudoku rules apply

In addition, the puzzle contains Phantom (Killer) Cages, defined as:
* Digits cannot repeat in a Phantom Cage and the sum of the cage is the clue outside its row or column
* Phantom cages are contiguous and made up of 4 cells or less, which are only in their row or column
* Each number clue represents only 1 phantom cage's sum in its row or column
* When two phantom cages overlap, a cage indicator always appears
* Phantom cages do not occupy or cross any of the red squares

Thanks to DiMono for providing an f-puzzles link (with a more concise rule set)

More concise ruleset from DiMono:

- Clues outside the grid indicate the sum of an invisible killer cage within that row/column's first four cells.
- Every cell that has a cage indicator is part of both the row's cage and the columns' cage.
- All cage indicators are given.
- Cages cannot include pink cells.

I was inspired by Simon’s solve of the Lake Trip puzzle the other day. I was intrigued by the Swordfish technique and wondered how you would go about setting such a puzzle. So, I gave it a try, but ended up with something completely different. I call it Phantom Killer Cages, since it uses killer-like cages, but they are mostly invisible (except where they overlap).
