159 Sandwiches

(Published on 19. February 2021, 21:33 by RockyRoer)

If you only allow sandwiches between 1 and 9, you can't determine which crusts are 1's or 9's without a given, or some other disambiguating rule. However, if you make things MORE ambiguous by allowing crusts of 15, 59, or 19, then you CAN determine the crusts without a given digit or additional rule. That seems counterintuitive to me -- but hey - it makes for a fun puzzle!

The Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Numbers outside the cage are sandwich sums, between the 1 and 5, or 1 and 9, or 5 and 9 in that particular row or column. These crust cells can be in any order. When there are two sums given for a row or column, they refer to two different crust combinations.
    • Ex: 13 | #1589#### | 8 is a valid clue because the 13 is the sum of the numbers between 1 and 9, and the 8 is the sum of the numbers between 5 and 9.

Wow, what a journey!
Very error sensitive, which caused me a few restarts. But the more satisfying it was to finally come through.
Thanks for this treasure!

Totally deserves its 100% rating, also my first solved 5 star puzzle (even though I ultimately voted for 4 stars in the end). Thank you.

That was intense! I broke it three times before finally being paranoid enough to get through. Great puzzle!

Trotz mehrmaliger Anläufe kann man einfach nicht aufgeben.
Wunderbares Rätsel, das völlig neue Ansätze erfordert.
Despite repeated attempts, you just can't give up.
Wonderful puzzle that requires completely new approaches.

Boy that was hard, it was a loong struggle for me. So many ways to go wrong here, but in the end it is very beautiful.

Lovely puzzle! The sequence of opening deductions was very unexpected. It was tricky throughout and I always needed to be stringent with my logic to progress. A fun challenge.

Reply: Thank you! I'm glad to see this puzzle getting some traction lately -- I thought it was the most approachable of my recent sandwich series, but it was stuck at 1, then 5 solves for so long. Maybe it will reach 9 soon? :-) Let me know if you have any puzzles needing assistance! Let's dig these unrated puzzles out of the flood! :-)
