Here is another training puzzle for the upcoming DSM qualifier on 21.-25.01.21. See the text below the grid for more examples. Have fun!
Fill the grid with digits 1 to 9 so that each row, column and 3x3 box contains each digit exactly once.
Digits in the first and second cell from the top and from the left are A and B. Clues outside the grid tell something about A and B: The clue closest to the grid gives the sum of A and B. The sum of the digits on positions A and B from that side is given in the clue in the grey bar.
Position sums is a novelty type we want to introduce this year, so available examples are rare. The concept was introduced by user "donut and chicken" in june 2020 with small additions to above core ruleset. To my knowledge it hasn't been used in tournaments before. Since then, Richard has also made it part of his Sudoku Variant Series. Here are all known examples:
Two-Digit combination Sudoku by Donut and chicken
Position Sums 2 by Donut and chicken
Position Sums 3 by Donut and chicken
Sudoku Variants Series (278) - Position Sums Sudoku by Richard
Solution code: Row 6, column 6.
