Nurikabe Killer Sudoku

(Published on 26. December 2020, 16:33 by udukos)

This puzzle is a crossover between a Nurikabe puzzle and a killer sudoku.

Rules of the puzzle:

1. Normal Sudoku rules apply.
2. Shade/ fill in the cells under following rules.
3. You cannot shade/ fill in cells containing numbers in their top left corner.
4. The digit in the cell with a number in their top left corner tells the number of contiguous white cells i.e. it represents a Nurikabe clue.
5. The number in the top left corner represent killer clues that tells the sum of all the digits in that white area. Numbers cannot repeat within a white area.
6. Each area of white cells is separated by black cells.
7. The black cells are linked to be a continuous wall. Black cells cannot be linked to be 2x2 square or larger.
8. All the Nurikabe clues have been given.

Note the inequality sign in the grid of the main puzzle.

Also note that, as is the norm with killer sudoku, the cell with the number in their top left corner might not be the leftmost cell of the highest row of that white area.

Here is an example on a 6x6 grid for illustration:

Now for the puzzle. It is also available online via Penpa plus.

Good luck. Have fun.

Phew that was hard, but I adore the wonderful logic and the interactions in this one, the part near the end was especially tricky but the nurikabe logic helped me a lot there :)

Great construction with a very tight solution path. Even after all the islands were placed, it was hard to believe that the sudoku would resolve.

Thanks so much for the example puzzle. I wouldn’t have tried it if not for that. Kinda like nurikabe, might have to try more of those in the future!

This is my first time posting a puzzle based on Nurikabe. Please let me know if any of the rules of the puzzle are not clear. I would appreciate the feedback.

Are all of the Nurikabe/Killer Sudoku clues already given? Or is it possible we might need to find more cages later?
