Pencil puzzle sudoku hybrid series #1 - Look-air sudoku
(Published on 28. October 2020, 11:11 by Aspartagcus)
This is a new type of hybrid that I created, between sudoku and look-air. If you are unfamiliar with look-air, check out this link (the rules are very simple):
Look-air rules and example
I've been told the break-in might be a bit tricky, if you want to try out a simpler 6x6 version,
you can do so here.
There's a hint below as well.
RULES:
- Standard sudoku rules apply, except using the digits 0-8.
- Standard look-air rules apply:
+ Shade some cells such that all orthogonally connected regions of shaded cells form perfect squares.
+ Two squares of the same size may not have a direct view of one another, i.e. have a straight line of unshaded cells in between them.
+ Digits in the grid (exceptions below) represent the number of shaded cells that share at least one edge with the cell (including the cell itself).
- 6s, 7s and 8s and digits within white circles do not act as clues for the look-air.
- Little killer clue rules: The numbers outside the grid are the sums of the cells in the diagonals indicated by the arrows. Digits may be repeated in these diagonals.
- The cell with a gray circle contains an odd value. It is not excluded from being a look-air clue, as the digits in other circles are.
Here's a 4x4 grid example using the digits 0-3:
And this is the puzzle:
Hint (highlight to see):
Consider the boxes with the fewest circles and the constellations of shaded squares which allow insertion of the needed amount of look-air clues in those boxes.
Enjoy!

Wonderful puzzle! The break in was very rewarding (though I appreciate that you added the odd circle :) ). Definitely deserves more solves!

Thanks! I do understand that the rules are a bit daunting, though. One solve closer to being rated! :D

Superb! Quite challenging to start, especially being unfamiliar with look-air, but I loved finding the logical moves.

Yes, the break-in is the trickiest part (and actually understanding the rules). Glad you enjoyed it, it was a lot of fun to set! :)

@cdwg2000: Thanks a lot. :)
Tasquare and look-air are similar, but differ in a few ways, though (not least that squares of same sizes can "see" each other in tasquare). Could be interesting to make a tasquare sudoku hybrid, though.

This is a modified Sudoku combined with Tasquare puzzle, very good!

Noticed that the Penpa+ link was to an earlier version of the puzzle, without the odd circle (that one is still solvable, but the break-in is harder). It has now been fixed.
