Decoding Killer

(Published on 26. October 2020, 21:57 by cam)

Here is another decoding puzzle. Before you begin, it's important to note that this type of puzzle requires a firm grasp of the English language. I sincerely apologize if this excludes you. I promise to make many more puzzles in the future that are more inclusive.

The killer cages are clues that are needed to solve the puzzle. Some (but not necessarily all) need to be decoded and then read from left to right and top to bottom. To decode a clue, subtract 26 from it as many times as you can without it becoming negative and then convert that number to it's alphabetical character (1=a, 2=b, 3=c,...)

Here is the puzzle. Enjoy! :) You can play it here.

Actually, that's super clever, and it's remarkable you were able to make it work. I wish I'd realized that the hint in the rules meant that some cages would use their number rather than their decoded letter - as written it suggests that cages you don't decode are not used, which is why I missed it. I would revise it to something like this for clarity:

"The 2-4 digit numbers you write into every killer cage are part of a clue that is needed to solve the puzzle. Each caged number must either be decoded or left as-is, and then they must all be read from left to right and top to bottom to reveal the final clue. To decode a number, subtract 26 [. . .]"

Also, I believe there's a puzzle tag to indicate that an understanding of English is required.

The solution path up to decoding the clue was smooth and fun. I think once that final rule is revised for clarity this would be a rather good puzzle.
