Rivers and Islands Fillomino

(Published on 19. October 2020, 10:04 by Jesper)

This is a fillomino-nurikabe hybrid inspired by matt383’s wonderful Rivers and Islands Sudoku series. I have used very similar rules, except that I have removed the Sudoku part and replaced it with Fillomino logic.

Rules

1) Standard Fillomino rules apply:
- Divide the grid into orthogonally connected regions
- Each square must contain a number equal to the number of squares in its region
- No two regions of same size may share an edge

2) The following Nurikabe hybrid rules apply:
- Colour each square either green (land) or blue (water)
- All water squares must form a single orthogonally connected area
- No 2x2 area may be entirely water
- An orthogonally connected group of at least 3 green squares is called an island
- Each green square in this puzzle must belong to an island
- Islands may touch diagonally, but not orthogonally
- Within an island, each square must contain a different number
- If an arrow is present in a square, the digit in that square equals the total number of squares in the indicated direction that have the same colour as the square with the arrow (see example)
- Not all possible arrows are given

Example (6x6):

Penpa: Rivers and Islands Fillomino

The puzzle follows:

Solution code: row 1 followed by column 10

Incredible!

Great puzzle! This combination of rules feels pretty different from either fillomino or nurikabe on their own to me, and it's sometimes a bit weird to scan. But there's lots of really cool deductions, and I especially like how everything resolves at the end.

Awesome puzzle, thanks!

Brilliant puzzle. Really tricky start for me, took me an age to work out what was going on, but once I got some momentum I couldn't tear myself away at the end. Thanks!

Great puzzle, and surprisingly not very difficult for me.

Incredible puzzle ! Felt almost broken at some points, only to find out there was always that tiny possibility to make it work and move forward... The break in was very nice geometric stuff that literally needed all the rules to work together ! Just superb !

This has to be one of the most intricate and diverse solution path in any puzzle I've seen. Very rewarding solve!

I'm slightly saddened I will no longer have many of your puzzles near the top of my 'nicest puzzles I haven't solved' list (but also relieved I will no longer think to myself that I have no idea how to begin to do those). The ratings are all so thoroughly deserved - every puzzle I've completed has had such beautiful and tight logic throughout the solve. Many were challenging, but at the same time I loved the pace in all of them. Despite their difficulty, I never felt totally lost and I absolutely take my hat off to you for striking such a delicate balance. Thank you so much :)

EDIT @polar: Thank you so much for solving so many of my puzzles and for the nice comments! It makes me really happy to hear that my fillomino variants have made you appreciate fillomino in a new way :) /Jesper

Incredible puzzle! Even though it took me much longer than most of your Fillomino variants, it never got frustrating and the logical path was very nicely constructed.

EDIT @Mark Sweep: Thanks! At times I have felt that I should have made the solving path for this puzzle a little bit more straightforward (given the initial slow progress on number of solves, and so on). So it is good to hear that some people really enjoyed it the way it is :)

On doing your recent fillomino, noticed I'd missed this one - enjoyable solve with a tricky middle section :)

Sehr schön! Schritt für Schritt kommt man der Lösung näher, aber es bleibt bis zum Ende konstant schwer.

Can you have a zero? Or a huge number?

EDIT @Thorsby: Thanks for solving! A zero is not allowed based on the rules of Fillomino. A huge number is theoretically possible (limited of course by the space available in the grid).
