The King's Mystery Sandwich

Here's a puzzle I created back in July.
Normal Sudoku rules apply. A digit cannot be placed in a cell that is within a King's move (in chess) of that same digit. Clues outside the grid show the sum of the digits between the Y and the Z in that row/column, where Y and Z are consistent for the whole puzzle.

Jetzt hab ich es gelöst, und noch immer nicht verstanden, welche Rolle Käfige bei diesem Rätsel spielen.

Wenn man erstmal die Werte für X und Y gefunden hat (was auch nicht sooo schwer ist), lässt es sich sehr flüssig lösen.
