Pentominous Star Battle

(Published on 7. September 2020, 08:25 by Jesper)

Rules

Place pentominoes in the grid, and stars within some squares of those pentominoes, so that all the following conditions are met:

- Exactly 2 stars in each row, in each column, and in each of the 12 standard pentomino types*
- Pentominoes must cover the whole grid, except the 4 central squares (shaded dark)
- Two pentominoes of the same type may not share an edge
- Stars may not be adjacent to each other (not even diagonally)
- Some borders between pentominoes are already given, and must be respected

*The standard free pentominoes are: F, I, L, N, P, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z (see below). Rotated and/or reflected pentominoes are still considered the same type.

Note that each individual pentomino can contain 0, 1 or 2 stars, as long as the total number of stars within all pentominoes of its type is exactly 2.

Awesome ! The pentomino part was quite easy for me, but the star battle took me forever. But it was very satisfying when I finally found the right way to approach it. Thanks for this stimulating entertainment :)

Really nice combo! It's an interesting twist to have these sort of disjoint regions for Star Battle.

Wow, very nice puzzle indeed! I probably spent more time on the Starbattle than I did placing the pentominoes :-)
Maybe a few things can be clarified in the rules though: stars cannot be placed next to each other (fortunately, I knew the Starbattle rules but perhaps others do not know this), also I have assumed that all 12 types need to be placed in the grid; perhaps this should be empathized?
W.r.t. the difficulty of the Starbattle: I am not very good at Starbattle so I did a small bifurcation in the beginning, after that it flowed nicely. Thanks!

Jetzt habe ich eine Lösung für die Pentominos, aber leider fehlen das "X" und das "I". Da muss ich mich wohl demnächst auf die Suche nach den beiden Deserteuren machen.

This was incredible! Pentominoes were so much fun. I am very new to StarBattles so it was a great challenge for a begginer.

Great puzzle, thanks! I especially enjoyed the Pentominous logic.

@Thorsby: thanks! You are indeed right, setting this was kind of a nightmare, since I couldn't tweak the 'regions' at all without severe knock-on effects, due to the pentominoes changing. So I had to start over many times before I found a pentomino configuration that enabled a star battle with a unique solution and a logical path close to what I had in mind.

Great puzzle! Must have been hard to construct.

Added Pentomino graphics. Thanks to uvo for creating the image and to Voyager for making me aware of it.
