Tired of Sudoku? How about a sequence?

(Published on 30. August 2020, 11:00 by Narayana)

This finite sequence has five elements:

9, 44, C, D, 174.

Find the missing ones.

Based on the feedback, I have decided to give more Hints. I really want this to be solved by more people but without giving it away. First I suggest skimming through the the cryptic hints in the comments. If that is too messy then come back here and reveal hints one by one as you need them. There are 3 key ideas that you will have to deduce. Some hints are redundant just to make sure you are in the right track. Enjoy!

Hint 1) Answer the first question in the title correctly! If you give the wrong answer then this riddle won’t be fun for you. This is KEY.

Hint 2) “How about a sequence?” But a sequence of WHAT?

Hint 3) Do you see that WISSEN=Knowledge tag? Well it can actually be replaced by another very common tag in the portal!

Hint 4) Courtesy of glum_hippo: This puzzle has a mirror puzzle that is “lighter” look at the sequence 1, 36, c, d, 146 lower case letters!

Hint 5) Each number should speak to you. The larger it is the louder it should speak, it helps if you have met them before. If they still don’t ring a bell then you should Ring them! (KEY WORD is same in English and German plus/minus grammar modifiers).

Hint 5.5) Courtesy of Voyager: My car is new I have never used it yet it came Tired! (English language dependent hint).

Hint 6) “Call” each number separately, so ring five times! They won’t fit on the same phone call all at once! (Phone is not a real life phone it stands for the KEY word from Hint 1.

Hint 7) I hope you are not tired! But something needs to be exhausted! Until there is no room for more.

Hint 8) A lot of people who have solved this had met 174 somewhere else in this website. It is in a puzzle by one of them! This hint is Hint 8 for a reason. Look at it! It has TWO of KEY WORD from Hint 5 (or 5.5). Also dividing by 2 the other way will take you one step closer to finding one puzzle author that inspired me.

Hint 9) If you go looking for the puzzle mentioned in Hint 8 everything will be REAL-clear once you see it. And you will see how you have been Orbiting the solution this whole time! You still have to do the work though so hopefully the Hints did not KILL the fun!

Solution code: C, D (no comma and no spaces).

This seems like an interesting puzzle but I have not been around this website for NEARLY as long as I ought to have been for any of this to even remotely have any sort of context lol

I needed hint 4, coupled with the the fact that you specifically invited me to this puzzle, before it eventually came to me.

Thanks for the invite. Can't believe I stumbled on this now. Just happened to be looking at some old puzzles and saw it.

Well, it's hard to comment.
At least after the solving I do not feel annoyed, let's say.

Added the Mystery tag.
Rationale behind tags (copied from forum):

-Sequence: A sequence of numbers, letters, etc. where you usually have to find out the next element or the law of formation.

- Mystery: A puzzle in which you (partially) have to find out what you actually have to do.

- Meta: A puzzle that relates to another puzzle in terms of content.

Hopefully, this also reduces ambiguity in Hint 3.

Normally a puzzle like this would be ROUNDLY criticized for being too esoteric, but I did like it.

The below commentary/hints are hilarious! :-D
That is super tough. Very nice one Narayana!

Maybe you should add the below commentary as being part of the puzzle. Then you might get more solves and the solver more enjoyment, if someones stumbles across this sequence puzzle.

Tut mir leid, da "klingelt" nichts.

I have marked the locations of Hints like this: "*)"

There are 4 stars total. Though one just reinforces the other so in total 3 key ideas. I am happy to reply to questions about any of them in a hidden comment.

I have given two hints previously.

*)But they still don't ring a bell. :( Hopefully they will ring something!

*)This puzzle should be exhausting, but not for the solver! :)

Still underestimated? ;-)

@SKORP17 I've tried ringing the numbers a couples of times, but the call keeps getting disconnected. :-D

*) Reply: You need to wait until it rings 5 times before hanging up. Even if your phone makes no sound.

@CHalb & SKORP17

Thank you for your feedback and help with grammar. I have made changes in order to make both english and german versions as similar as possible.

As CHalb says, the intent of this puzzle is to make the instructions as minimal as possible and let the numbers speak from themselves. Some interpretation is needed, but I promise you that it has nothing to do with how the words are written. It is more about the meaning.

In short: It was never the intent to create a "Red herring" with capitalization.

Equalizing minor grammar differences between English and German versions. Set difficulty to 3 incase I underestimated.

Da C und D in Grossbuchstaben erscheinen, könnte es von Bedeutung sein , wenn Folge ebenfalls mit einem grossen "F" geschrieben wird, zumal das F auf ABCDE folgt!

This is a kind of mystery puzzle since it is without a clear instruction. My opinion: In such a puzzle EVERY SMALL DETAIL is important for us solvers because it MIGHT be important for us.

So the differing descriptions of the solution code in German and English attract my attention as well.

In English sequence with lower case is correct, in German folge with lower case for a noun is wrong.

on 2. September 2020, 11:15 by CHalb
Well, almost :-). Folge as a noun with capital F.

on 2. September 2020, 11:12 by Narayana
@CHalb Danke
Is it correct now?

Oh but the english one also has lower case... maybe it is not as important. ;)

How about the better German translation I'm suggesting?
