Song Trivia Sudoku

(Published on 18. August 2020, 03:26 by Ryx)

This alliteratively named band, called _ _ _ _ _    _ _ _ _ _ _, released a song in 19_1 that peaked at #4 and made the Billboard Hot 100 Chart the following year.

That hit song was titled: # # # - # # # #/_ _ _ _ _

Given those clues, normal Sudoku rules apply and the following:

  1. U=1, Y=2, N=3, O=4, T=5, V=6, E=7, M=8, J=9
  2. Yellow squares are a repeated digit along their diagonal
  3. The band's name and part of the song title are given (spelled out, in correct order) along diagonally adjacent colored cells (diagonals can bend at the edge of the puzzle). The remaining colored cells are used in the # sum clues (see d below).
  4. The other part of the song title comes from the # clues. These clues are the sum of the digits in their column, where the digit equals it's position in the column. Sums do not total to more than 9 and one column's sum is zero. Using column 4 from the puzzle as an example, the sum clue could potentially be: 1, 7, 1+7 or 9 (ignoring the '25' clue).
  5. Cells framed with a dotted line are used as clues 2 times (i.e. part of two different clues)
  6. The dotted lines, in boxes 3, 5, 6 and 8, represent the 3-letter month abbreviation, 2-digit date and 4-digit year the song was released.
  7. The '25' pencil mark clues are given to help you start to work out the word part of the puzzle

The way to solve this puzzle is to solve the trivia questions first, then place the answers in the puzzle, subsituting the numbers for letters, given the legend on the side. As an example, if you found the answers to the trivia questions were: Song Name: 165-2505/Betty Year: 1981 Band Name: Ten Ten Tummy Then your board would like like the example (above, on the right), using the following logic:
* the #1 is placed in r8c2 because that is the only blue cell in column 2 that has not been used as a clue (r5c2 and 47c2 were used as part of the band name and are not surrounded by a dotted line, so not used twice)
* a zero is used for the 6th number clue above column 7, since the blue cells in column 7 were already used as band/song name clues and are not surrounded by a dotted line, so not used twice
* the number clue above column 8 must be a 5 placed in row 9, since the song/band clue in r5c8 is a Y=2
* the number clue above column 7 must be a 0 becuase the blue clues in that row were used as part of the band/song names and are not surrounded by a dotted line, so not used twice Of course, the example answers are wrong, for a couple reasons (aside from there is no such band ... or such song that was meets the criteria):
* the "B" in Betty is not in the letters given that make up all of the answers (UYNOTVEMJ)
* the 5 is doubled in row 9 (columns 4 and 8) Many thanks to Rollo for pointing out my initial submission was really lacking in the description/rules for this puzzle. I even had trouble with them, when I revisited the puzzle after a few months. Hopefully now, with the example, things are more understandable.

Highlight below for a hint, if trivia and/or word puzzles are "not your thing".

A google search for this term should lead you to the answers:

song title starts with 86

Spoiler alert:
Highlight below if you want the song title:

876-5309/Jenny

Highlight below if you want the song release date:

NOV 16 1981

Solution code: Row 7, column 7, 18 digits no space or comma

@Rollo

You are right, sorry about that. It made a lot of sense to me when I created the puzzle, but looking at it now, even I am confused. I will work on some better instructions and perhaps an example.

Thank you for your input!

Eigentlich ein ganz nettes Rätsel, aber die Beschreibung ist völlig unverständlich, auch im Englischen :-(. Vielleicht erstelle ich mal eine einfache Anleitung.

Corrected German version (translation caused extra "_" in clues).
