Galaxy Killer Sudoku

(Published on 11. May 2020, 11:33 by Phistomefel)

This puzzle is a mixture of a Killer Sudoku and a Galaxy Puzzle.

The usual sudoku rules apply. The dots given in the grid are the centers of pointsymmetric galaxies (non-overlapping sets of orthogonally-connected cells), which function as cages for the killer sudoku. The number above a dot indicates the sum of the digits in such a cage. The digits in a cage may not repeat. In contrary to a classical galaxy puzzle, not every cell in the grid has to be part of a galaxy.

The puzzle is also available online via Penpa Plus. Have fun solving!

Solution code: 2nd and 6th row

I'm surprised that it's labled 4 stars. I just faced few tricky points and solved in half an hour. However I know different people think differently(
Anyway this is a very good puzzle!

I remember having a go at this one around a year ago and got completely stumped for hours. Trying again today, I completed in under half an hour! Every step was so fascinating and beautiful, and kept me interested the whole time. It’s also nice to see how far I’ve come in solving :) Thank you for this gorgeous puzzle!

What a wonderful puzzle, Phistomefel. You always take good ideas and set the best possible versions of them.

After doing two other Galaxy puzzles, I had a quick start on this one and thought it'd be a breeze... ha, not quite! There were a couple deductions in there that quite stumped me, but wow, just so utterly beautiful -- just like the entire puzzle as a whole for that matter
(LOL -- just saw Prutsbeest comment, that pretty much sums my experience!)

Very nice! I ported to https://f-puzzles.com/?id=2dvzhs3w but i had to get a little creative to make numbers visible.

I had never tried a galaxy puzzle. That was very fun, and a nice hybrid too ! Thanks again !

Clarification of the rules

on 4. July 2020, 20:20 by Phistomefel
@DukeBG: Thank you! I'll add that passage to the rules.

I thoroughly enjoyed the puzzle, however I suggest the following being added to the text of the rules:

"<...> pointsymmetric galaxies (non-overlapping sets of orthogonally-connected cells), which function as cages for the killer sudoku."

I was not very familiar with the rules of galaxy puzzles and the present rules don't state explicitly that the galaxies cannot be disjointed or that they don't share cells. The cages _usually_ don't do either in killer sudoku, but I started the puzzle assuming they could overlap (galaxies in the night sky can do that) and wouldn't make much progress at all.

Again, this was most likely just me being unfamiliar with the terms used in galaxy puzzles, but this clarification wouldn't hurt.
