Sudoku Variants Series (156) - MaxAscending Sudoku

(Published on 22. November 2016, 00:00 by Richard)

For this Sudoku Variants Project I have planned to publish a different Sudoku variant every Tuesday. I will see how long it takes before I am running out of ideas.

MaxAscending Sudoku
Place the digits from 1 tot 9 in every row, column and 3x3-block. Clues outside the grid indicate the length of the longest series of ascending digits in the corresponding direction.

Solve online in F-Puzzles (thx bbutrosghali!)

Solution code: Row 7, followed by column 9

Wow, this has been one of the hardest puzzles for me in this series so far. Took me several tries and a couple of hours in the successful one. But I can say: There is always a deduction available and no guessing required ;)

I can't put my finger on why, but something about this Sudoku felt just beautiful, almost like art. Enjoyed solving it so much. One of your best!

That is very nice of you!
Personally, I don't think it's the most interesting of this type. This is the first one I have ever written, and I feel it is very much 'overclued'. Later I have made a few more that were more 'build up'. In the Dutch Sudoku Championship 2019 was one with much less clues. You can find it here if you might be interested in solving another one:

This was a tough one for me.

@Statistica: thanks, and you are right about the number of hints. Like it is now, it might even be confusing.

Very nice, but I think it's not necessary to give all 36 hints!?
