Wichtel 2013 (10): Doppelschlangen-Höhle mit Doppellöwen
(Published on 30. May 2014, 10:32 by wichtel)
This year Santa Claus has made himself a present: a puzzle creation machine. That's because he is not willing to make again 11 puzzle presents himself. When the machine arrives at the morning of December 24th he tears off the packaging and looks at the many levers, controllers and buttons. Of course he is not patient enough to read the instructions first. In juvenile carelessness he rather presses several buttons, positions some controllers and pulls the "Make Puzzle" lever. The machine starts to rumble and the result are the following lines:
Double snakes cave with double lions
12x12 diagram
Hints outside the diagram: above C3=3, C10=7; left R3=1, R5=7
Number hints: R2C9=13, R5C1=19, R5C3=6, R5C6=2, R5C9=35, R5C11=20, R11C3=17, R12C12=11
Arrow hints: R1C12=
↙, R2C1=
↘, R4C6=
↘, R7C4=
↖, R8C5=
↗, R8C12=
↖
"What's that rubbish?" grumbles Santa Claus, "you really can't make anything out of this." Now he takes the instruction booklet, skims wildly through it and finds on page 365a the following note: "If the diagram should be part of the output, you have to activate the "Print Diagram" switch simultaneously with the "Make Puzzle" lever. Warning: A subsequent output of the diagram is unfortunately impossible." (The reaction of Santa Claus is omitted here with respect for juvenile readers.) He grubs further in the instructions and finds: "If an instruction for the puzzle is desired, please make two and a half turns of the "Make Instruction" crank and pull the "Add Example" knob strongly." So that's what he does and gets this instruction:
Find a cave system formed of horizontally and vertically connected cells without 2x2 areas. The walls are connected with the border of the grid. Cells with numbers are part of the cave and indicate, how many cave cells are horizontally or vertically visible from that position including the cell with the number itself. Inside the cave live two snakes with any lenghts. They may not touch each other and some snake fields may be given, not necessarily head and tail. The snake part numbers have been added to the cave hints. Numbers outside the grid are sums of the snake hints of both snakes. Additionally inside the cave live two lions in each row and each column. They may not touch each other but they are allowed to touch the snakes. Arrows are inside the cave and have to point at at least one lion. Neither snakes nor lions may be positioned on arrows and additionally lions not on numbers. Here a small example with only one snake and one lion respectively:
Solution code: The two diagonals from top left to bottom right and from top right to bottom left; H for empty cave cells, W for walls, L for lions and S for snake cells.

One of the most incredible minimalist constructions I have ever seen. Completely ridiculous that this solves

@en-passant: Ja, das stimmt.

Das ist wieder sehr spektakulär, vielen Dank wichtel! Die Löwen dürfen sich auch diagonal nicht berühren, korrekt?

Stunning construction - it's incredible how much information can be derived from so few clues.

Boah was das gut! Aber sehr schwer. Immer wieder denselben Denkfehler gemacht.

@RALehrer: As far as I can see the Englisch instruction is identical to the German one.

I keep arriving at a contradiction - is there a trick here where the English translation may not be perfect?

@RALehrer: Since Santa Claus missed to activate the right switch, you have to draw the diagram by yourself based on the information in the text.

So eine Rätselerstellmaschine hätte ich auch gerne. :))
Darf auch ein anderes Modell sein, Hauptsache vom selben Hersteller.

does anyone care to post the diagram? :)
