Octopus

(Published on 15. November 2012, 10:28 by zorant)

While preparing myself for the WPC in Croatia, I created this puzzle. I hope you would like it.

Rules:
Place in the grid below eight snakes, each of length 21. The snakes may not touch neither themselves nor each other, not even diagonally. The heads (1) and tails (21) of all the snakes are already given. The numbers outside the grid show how many squares are occupied by the snakes in the corresponding row or column, heads and tails included. The snakes may not occupy black squares.

Solution code: row 14, column 15; use S for snake, X for blank square.

For anyone wondering: The inner dark square-shaped line has no meaning (e.g. the "1" fields count towards the numbers outside the grid.)

Nice one! It reminds me of one of my first Monatsrätsel (http://www.logic-masters.de/Monatsraetsel/mr_archiv.php?name=2009-02-00)
