Neujahrsgeschenk

(Published on 31. December 2011, 16:15 by pokerke)

Last year I got you a little Christmas gift, this year I went to the same store and got you a New Year's gift. It's similar to last year's gift, but it has one extra dimension. It's not a picture but a statue instead.

It's still a Rundweg puzzle, but in 3D now. The grid above shows the three layers of the puzzle from top to bottom, with their correct orientation. This year's box contains the same blocks, plus one extra small 1x1x1 piece (it's so small that it's easy to loose, so it's good to have a spare). This extra piece (one of the two 1x1 blocks) should go on the place marked with the red X in the puzzle. Luckily the box also contains assembly instructions.

The colours of the blocks match their position in the puzzle. A line between two blocks means they touch orthogonally, at one or more faces. The position of the line in relation to the blocks is irrelevant. All orthogonal connections are given. The given clues are 3D Rundweg clues for the complete statue, not for the individual blocks. The numbers indicate the number of (out of 6) faces of each cube-cell that are used by the outer area of the statue. The statue can contain holes (like a donut), but cannot touch itself only at a corner or an edge.

Can you assemble the statue?

Solution code: Happy New Year! First the top (upper 13x5 layer), then the underside of the statue, followed by the letters of (only) the pentominos encountered in the top row (containing clues 3333342) of the top level, left to right.

Imho it is fixed now! Thanks for noticing. Luckily the picture was not really essential for solving the puzzle.

@pokerke: Imho in the english version the first picture of the german version is missing.

Wunderschönes Rätsel - auch wenn ich gleich mehrere Regeln komplett missverstanden habe.

@ pokerke: Thank you very much for the explanation, now I know what to do (having about 20% solved, I hope). Very nice and amazing puzzle!

@ibag:
There is no traditional Rundweg in the puzzle, but only a 3-dimensional variation of a Rundweg. It consists of faces, not of lines, and together they enclose a volume (a statue), not a surface.

The idea is that every cell in the puzzle is a 1x1x1 cube-block, which has 6 faces. The puzzle has 13x5x3 such blocks. Ninety (12*5 + 5*4 + 2*3 + 1*2 +2*1) of these are part of the statue to find, the rest is not. The outer faces of the cells of the statue are the surface of the statue. The given numbers indicate how many of the faces of each cell are on the surface of the statue. For example, if the statue consisted of only one cell, this cell would contain a 6, with 6 cells containing a 1 around it in each of the 6 directions. All other cells would contain a 0, including the 12 cells that share one edge (line) with the statue. The numbers count faces, not edges as in a normal Rundweg.

Hm, die Rolle der vorgegebenen Zahlen glaubte ich anfangs verstanden zu haben, nun nicht mehr. Geht denn auf den Kanten der Statue ein Rundweg entlang?

Clarifications in the text. a.o text that "blocks can not overlap" removed as it is so obvious that it was more confusing than helpful.

First version of the German translation added, let me know if it needs to be improved.

Yes, that look's very good again. So I can look forward to solving a Rundwerg from you again, that's great!

Oh, vielen Dank! Das sieht ja toll aus und ich würde es am liebsten gleich auspacken. Dann bekämen aber die Gäste nichts zu essen ...

Happy new year, pokerke!
