The number give the number of white fields, that can be seen horizontally and vertically from that field.
Additionally animals and gates are shown in the puzzle. Fields with animals or gates must not be blackened. Gates must be placed in the cave such that exactly two of the four neighbouring fields are black and these two cells have to lie on opposite sides of the gate (the puzzle border counts as a blackened field). See the following examples.
The gates divide the cave into areas. One area is the visitor area, all other areas are cages. In each cage there is exactly one animal and each cage is connected to one gate. The visitor area is connected to all of the gates.
In the following example the visitor area is marked grey:

Statt drüber zu diskutieren, wäre es eigentlich sinnvoller, das im Wiki zu korrigieren. ;-)

The English version of Puzzlewiki: "Blacken some fields (without number) so that the remaining fields build a connected cave. The cave does not contain any 2x2-fields and my not touch itself not even diagonally."
So it really seems an oversight in the German description.

Stimmt: Weder im Puzzlewiki noch hier steht, dass der Weg sich nicht berühren oder kreuzen darf. (In Bernis Denksel-Anleitung zu "Höhle" ist diese Bedingung gegeben.)

@MiR: Hierfür hat Micha folgende Bedingung formuliert: "Zäune müssen so in der Höhle platziert sein, dass von den vier unmittelbar benachbarten Feldern genau ZWEI SCHWARZ sind und diese beiden Felder SICH GEGENÜBER liegen."
