Normal sudoku rules apply. The digits 1-9 appear once in each row, column, and 3x3 box.
The light gray thermometer is a slow thermometer. Digits strictly increase or stay the same as they move away from the bulb of slow thermometers. White dots separate two cells containing consecutive digits. Digits along an arrow sum to the digit in that arrow’s circle. Dark gray lines without black highlights are ornamental and do not affect the puzzle. Gray lines with black highlights are evolutionary lines.
Additionally, the arrow circles are islands waiting to be explored by the crew of the HMS Beagle. However, they are covered in fog – dangerous, indeed. Placing a correct digit clears all fog in the (up to) eight cells surrounding the digit. When the islands are cleared of the fog, information within the island’s cell will indicate the type of constraint to be used on the evolutionary line nearest the letter being pointed to by that arrow.
Potential constraint lines are below. Note: not all will be discovered.
(DW) Dutch Whisper – Adjacent digits on the line must have a difference of at least four.
(EN) Entropy – Every three adjacent cells on the line must have one digit from (1,2,3) one from (4,5,6) and one from (7,8,9).
(GW) German Whisper – Adjacent digits on the line must have a difference of at least five.
(M3) Modulo 3 – Every three adjacent cells along the line must have one digit from (1,4,7) one from (2,5,8) and one from (3,6,9).
(PA) Palindrome – Digits along the length of the line read the same from both ends of the line.
(RE) Renban – digits on the line form a non-repeating, consecutive set of digits that can be placed in any order.
(RS) Region Sum – digits on the line sum to the same total within each 3x3 box.
