Project Africa

(Eingestellt am 6. April 2024, 09:32 Uhr von ThePedallingPianist)

On Sunday 7th April, Russ Cook is due to complete his mission to become the first person to run the entire length of Africa, and has made over £500k for charity so far. This awesome feat may not have inspired me to run across a continent just yet, but it did inspire me to throw together a puzzle to mark the achievement!

Whilst the sudoku itself may not blow your mind, please consider sharing or even contributing to Russ' fundraising efforts.

Colourblind friendly version
(inequality signs on top of colours)

Normal sudoku rules apply; i.e. place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column and 3x3 box.

The route (red line) is a German Whisper; i.e. adjacent digits on the line must differ by at least 5.

On land, "hotter" cells contain higher digits; i.e. orange cells contain larger digits than orthogonally adjacent yellow cells, which contain larger digits than orthogonally adjacent green cells.

The four cages must be filled with four important numbers from Russ Cook's journey, read left to right. The solver must decide which number goes in which cage:

352 (days on mission);
19 (million steps, at least);
16 (countries/cells passed through);
? (total no. of "1s and 2s" on the route*)

(*"1s and 2s" is how Russ refers to left foot steps and right foot steps)

Lösungscode: Bottom row, left to right

Tagline "You've traversed the entire continental land mass, now do the sudoku. Africa: how hard can it be?"

@thepedallingpianist Thanks so much for adding the colourblind variant! I did manage to finish it before I saw your comment (using higher-contrast colours in SudokuPad), but I think the inequality sign variant will be very helpful for anyone else who runs into problems.

@Philologos Thanks! I didn’t know that worked with cells I hadn’t coloured myself!

@Something Wellesian I am not sure this is sufficient, but on Sudokupad, if you click on a green cell, all green cells will be highlighted. Same for the yellow ones.

I don’t suppose there’s a possibility of a colourblind-friendly variant of this? The green and yellow are very similar to my eyes.

TPP: Thank you for the suggestion and apologies for not thinking of this myself! It sounds like you've found a solution by double-clicking colours, but I've also added a link to a colourblind friendly version with inequalities if this is helpful. :)

Very nice, well-set puzzle. More importantly, thanks for bringing this incredible feat and Russ Cook's worthwhile charities to our attention.
