Lawful Wrogn

(Eingestellt am 20. März 2023, 16:33 Uhr von Niverio)

This puzzle's name is a direct tribute to Undar Beyond's Chaotic Wrogn, as it was the puzzle I primarily was inspired by. After setting Liar Spiral last year, I decided to take a gander at a "relatively decent looking" Wrogn puzzle, and here is the result. Estimated difficulty is around 4/5, but the solve times might vary as there are many steps that are not hard, but might be tricky to spot.

Rules:
Normal Sudoku rules apply but in the end grid, every clue is wrogn (invalid)! A clue is valid if:

  • Digits strictly increase from the bulb end of a thermo.
  • Digits along a white dot are consecutive.
  • Digits along a black dot are in a ratio of 1:2.
  • Digits along a gray dot fulfill any of the 4 constraints of Kropki Pairs or XV pairs.
  • ALL digits inside a quadruple clue are found in the surrounding 4 cells.
  • Numbers on the outside are valid Numbered Rooms or Skyscraper clues:
    • Skyscraper: Treat every digit in the grid as buildings of that height. Clues represent the number of visible skyscrapers from that direction. Taller buildings obscure vision of shorter buildings.
    • Numbered Rooms: Clues outside the grid indicate the digit which has to be placed in the Nth cell in the corresponding direction, where N is the digit placed in the first cell in that direction.

Puzzle Links: You can solve the puzzle in either F-Puzzles or in the CTC Software. CTC version has answer check.

Lösungscode: Row 6 of the puzzle.

What does "in the end grid" mean? Are the clues only invalid in box 9?

~ Sorry, only now saw the comment. In the end grid means "in the finished grid", so the entire grid is included.

334 minutes of pure torture and unending fun, but I got there!!! It is not a miracle that some of us could solve it, the real miracle is that someone can set a puzzle like this! Take a bow, @ Niverio, and thanks for sharing :).

Yes, yes, yes!!! I did it!
Very hard puzzle! Each discovered step made me proud of myself :)

Very difficult all the way through the end. It was so very much fun, thanks a lot for setting this masterpiece!

@SuWi: Your last sentence and reasoning is correct :) A quad clue is invalid as long as (at least) one of the numbers is missing from the surrounding cells.

@SuWi: Yes the clues must be wrong for both. If you need some more direct help, feel free to post your logic as a hidden comment :)

Somehow I don't understand the rules regarding the numbers on the outside. When this clue is valid if the number is a valid skyscraper clue OR a valid numbered rooms clue. What ist the opposite of that? What is an invalid clue? Must both clues be wrong? That seems logical to me, but it cannot be true because of the 8 in the lower part of the puzzle. Can anybody help me?

Unusually smooth and well-balanced wrogn puzzle. Thanks Niv!

Awesome puzzle! For a wrogn sudoku, this is impressively neat while still managing to have beautiful logic throughout. Thanks for the fun Niverio!! :)

I ought to apologise - my comment last night was made after a very long day and I missed out the crucial detail that I have no doubt that my getting stuck was my own incompetence, because the puzzle was really cool up to there and I'm sure it would've been great beyond there as well had I understood it! Really nice ideas in there so thank you for such a great puzzle :)

It's a bit like a night out in a new city and having a few drinks here and there for an hour or so and then going back to the hotel to have a few more at the bar, only to discover that the bar is actually on the 12th floor, the elevator is out of order and a few of the steps in the staircase seem to be missing (although they are there).

When you finally make it to the bar, you do feel a certain appreciation for having made it, and there is an excellent group of people already there to welcome and congratulate you, and the cocktails are pretty, pretty good.

I loved the first 30 minutes or so of the solve - really nice and smooth with some very satisfying logic!

The next 4 hours of staring blankly at the grid, however, was a little more frustrating!! I'd love to see the intended solution path, because I'm afraid to admit that I had to resort to a series of enormous bifurcations for each miniscule deduction!

~Oh wow, that's definitely not intended! If you contact me through Discord (Niverio#8958 is my tag) I can showcase what the intended path was for the steps you have missed.

Well, I must say I liked it, even though I don't really like wrogn puzzles. But you convinced me with the "relatively decent looking" grid :)

To summarize my thoughts about the puzzle overall, I shall make this typical bingo board:
- Hmm, this is such a beautiful design!
- Wait, these clues are sus... Oh yeah, these, and those as well... ugh... ah that's why those were there...
- Duh, these clues are even less useful than a chocolate teapot...
- Wow Niv, how did you think of these quad circles?? No way, the digits just kept coming!
- Damn, these skyscraper clues... stop showing off Niv (smh)
- Heck, I even forgot that Numbered Room existed as well (lol)
- Again with the outside clues... (slap on the forehead)
- Why did you have to make the ending like that, Niv...
- Nah nah nah nah, stop showing off Niv (smh, part 2)
