Sparse Minefieldoku

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits along the indicated diagonal cannot repeat. Digits separated by a white dot must be consecutive.
One of the sudoku digits represents a mine. This digit must be determined by the solver. Digits in circles indicate how many cells in the surrounding 3x3 area contain mines. Similarly, digits in boxes indicate how many cells in the surrounding 3x3 area (including itself) do not contain mines. Mines cannot appear in circles or boxes.

I hadn't appreciated just how brilliant that little 4x4 example is -- I jumped right into the main puzzle (which clearly wasn't the best idea considering what happened haha). It's the perfect introduction to this ruleset, which I hope more people will try!

Fun puzzle indeed, but I got a taste of my own medicine there, as this was trickier to me than its 2/5 stars seemed to suggest. I looked at the ruleset and thought it looked similar to the Still Life ruleset, but, well, maybe because of that, it kept tripping me up as I kept mixing up the two
But when I finally managed to keep these separate, it went pretty smoothly indeed, and it was still super fun all the way. Bravo! :D

Very nice variant. Finding the mines was a lot of fun and not too difficult but not that easy. Some interesting logic was needed. After finding the mines I thought "And how does this solve?". But it went quite smoothly.
