The small number in each caged cell is the total sum of all digits to the right of that cell in its row and below that cell in its column, not including the caged cell itself.

Thanks! As for whether a more complex (but not extremely hard) version of this is possible, I wondered the same thing. Perhaps a more talented setter than I could see what they can do with it...

Fun new rule idea, I enjoyed it. I did notice that a lot of the clues resolved things via "every candidate has to be extremal". I wonder if there is potential for more complex interactions between clues to resolve them without making the difficulty completely unreasonable.
