Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't understand the variant rule. As far as I can see, all thermos will have every digit in common with the big thermo, so what am I missing? Can someone explain the variant in another way? Thanks in advance.

Hey ceevio, it's all good. So yes you are right that each thermo will have all of its digits in common with the 9-cell thermo. But the key to this variant is the word "any". For *any* two thermos, they must share at least 1 digit.
This means the thermo in box 3 and the thermo in box 8 must share at least 1 digit. Also the thermo starting in R3C7 and the thermo starting in R5C7 must have at least 1 digit in common. And the thermo starting in R1C6 and the thermo starting in R9C3 must have at least 1 digit in common. And the list goes on... Any two thermos in the puzzle must have at least 1 digit in common. Not just the 9-cell thermo. I hope this helps! Let me know if you need more clarification :)

F-puzzles will not look for the extra variant rule! Can you provide your solution code in a hidden comment? Then I can help you out!
